I. Прочтите и устно переведите текст. Перепишите и письменно переведите 2, 3 и 5-ый абзацы.
1. After the German hail conquered the Western Roman Empire and settled permanently on its territory, they came into contact with the local population, Roman and Gallic, people who were much more advanced culturally than the invaders themselves. The Romans’' customs differed vastly from those of barbarians and the Romans used numerous law codes to administer justice.
2. The Germans settled down all over the vast territory of the former Roman state and gradually become assimilated by the local population. Little by little they began to forget their old way of life and adopted a new one, which reflected the new conditions of their existence.
3. The barbarians had never written down their laws; the elders, the judges and even each member of the community just kept them in their minds and passed them down from generation to generation.
4. But now, with life more complicated, the Germans realised that their laws required a written form. By that time, many of the barbarians were already speaking Latin and, as they had no written language of their own, used Latin to write about their laws. These codes have received the name of the barbarians laws. The Salic Franks, the Salic Law, the Kipnarians Franks, the Kipnarian Law, the Saxons, the Saxon law, etc.
5. After they had investigated a crime, the judges chose an applicable law from the code of their tribe and imposed a corresponding penalty. The trials were cruel, and the decisions mostly promoted the interests of the noble and rich Franks and ruined the ordinary freemen.

V. Выпишите из 4-го абзаца текста существительные, которые по форме совпадают с соответствующими глаголами и их грамматические функции могут быть определены только по месту в предложении.

VI. Перепишите данные ниже предложения. Определите по грамматическим признакам, какой частью речи является слово, оформленное окончанием -s и какую функцию оно выполняет:
а) признак множественного числа имени существительного;
б) показатель 3-го лица единственного числа в Present Simple Tense;
в) показатель притяжательного падежа имени существительного.
г) сокращенная форма глагола to be.
